Who do you work for? Whenever you ask this question to many people, they start talking about the company they work for or their boss. I find it interesting and remarkable that people always feel like they are a servant to someone else. The reality is that people actually work for one person – themselves.
Work for Yourself
Whether people know it or not, they actually all have their own personal brand. Each person is made up of their own individual strengths and weaknesses, their own likes and dislikes, and those establish what your personal brand is all about. What might drive you to work every day or be motivated to succeed is different than the next person. You don’t work for someone else. You work for yourself because you are driven by something that is furthering your own lifestyle.
Realizing This
It took me a while to realize this in my career. Look, I’ve always considered myself to be comfortable being autonomous and doing my own thing. While every organization has goals and aspirations, it’s important find your why and understand your connection to the bigger picture. Just doing something to serve someone else’s agenda doesn’t cut it. What excites me is what I can do with the money that I make at work in my life.
Final Thoughts
We don’t live to work. We work to live. How each of us decides to live our lives or do the things that we do to make money is genuinely up to us. We can choose to be miserable in jobs that we don’t like, or we can follow our talents and succeed in areas that make more sense to us. The choice is yours. You need to find your why and determine what it is that drives you to do what you do.
