I often talk about management and leadership in their role in producing successful outcomes for the team. When I speak about management, there’s also an element of managing yourself that’s not really discussed much, though. It’s tough some days. There are challenges that all of us face and walls of resistance, and pockets of adversity that we need to overcome. How one manages themselves through the challenges that they face is vital in succeeding in life.
3 Ways to Better Manage Yourself – Emotionally, Mentally, and Physically
More people in this world suffer from mental health issues, emotional distress, or physical pain. I believe a high percentage of these issues are the result of how you choose to manage yourself. There are 3 ways you can become better at managing yourself from an emotional, mental, and physical perspective that all comes down to making choices.
Slow down
The world is moving so fast. Many people are rushing from one task to the next. For some, there never seems to be enough time to focus on oneself. Regardless of how busy life gets, it’s vital that everyone slows down and takes time for themselves. Managing yourself well is closely connected to how you manage time. Find those moments where you can actually slow down, whether it’s through meditation or finding time to go for a walk by yourself. Managing yourself means that you find me time. It would be best if you decompressed; however, it works best for you. Focus on giving yourself a break from other responsibilities, slow down, and control the pace of your life. It doesn’t need to be so crazy.
Care Less
We care a lot. Sometimes we care too much about things that are not within our control or that really don’t make much of a difference. To manage yourself better, sometimes you need to care a little bit less. I’m not suggesting that you should be apathetic to everything that’s going on around you. You still need to care about the quality of work or relationships that you have. But you don’t need to obsess on it and manage every detail to the point that it stresses you and others out. Sometimes it’s okay to just a step back and let things fall where they may. Sometimes good enough is really good enough.
Choose to be Happy
We only have so much time on this planet. There are 24 hours in the day. We sleep for 5-8 hours of it. Another third or so of the day is usually tied up working, leaving very little time left to do the things that you really want to do. It can be easy to slip into a state of negativity, being upset about everything that’s going on wrong around you. With so little time left in your life, you sometimes need to choose to be happy. Don’t focus on things that make you miserable or get you worked up. If you’re around people who are always negative, you will also pick up that contagious thought and be negative yourself. Many don’t realize this, but you control your own thoughts, actions, and the environment by choosing what you want to believe, what you hear, what you see, and what you do. With the clock of life always running, choose to be happy.
Your Life; Your Choice
Look at your life. You can choose to be miserable, or you can choose to be happy. Do what you want, when you want, how you want, and you are more likely to manage yourself in ways that you never thought possible. For me, success is being happy. How I manage myself and prioritize myself first makes all the difference. The same applies to you. Manage yourself appropriately, and you will find success.
